Moon Lovers Exhibit Peripherals – Phoenix Institute
Led by internationally celebrated master sculptor Qiu Shuangjiong (邱双炯), The Phoenix Institute of Porcelain Fine Arts produces porcelain works in the ‘Dehua’ or ‘blanc de chine’ (in the West) style. The Phoenix Institute is known as a pioneer, developing new techniques within and incorporating technological advancements into its practice. Its sculptures most often depict subjects from traditional Chinese storytelling, such the female figures in Moon Lovers (translated title), inspired by the legend of Chang’e (嫦娥).
This plate set and banner were originally designed as merchandise and signage for a local museum’s special exhibit commemorating the Chinese space program’s launch of Chang’e 5. The exhibit, which planned to feature Moon Lovers alongside other works referencing the Chang’e legend, was ultimately canceled in mid-development due to COVID19 concerns.
The “Rocket” design showcases The Phoenix Institute’s developments in robotic free-arm porcelain etching with a playful re-interpretation of Moon Lovers. When held to light, the etching technique lends a particularly beautiful, romantic glow to linear designs. The “Rocket” design takes advantage of this technique with a simple, fresh linework design which makes the beautiful flow of the traditional style accessible to a wider range of museum patrons.
The packaging carries the same whimsical motifs to a minimalist aeronautics-inspired box featuring both Chinese and English .
